Any DC and Marvel fan can tell you who their favorite hero is. In fact, we can bet that there’s been pretty extensive debate or who the real superhero is. However, how often do we focus on the villains? In this list, we’ve compiled the 20 most powerful villains to ever grace the DC and Marvel universes. From their raw power to the levels of evil that they represent, this list will be sure to get you fired up for the dark side for once!

20. Magneto

""
Image: Comic Book

For those of you familiar with the X-Men, Magneto will instantly be a memorable face. Magneto is a mutant with the power to manipulate magnetic fields and he is the eternal rival to Professor X. Magneto also has the ability to basically end the world by shifting the polarity (and axis) of the planet. So that definitely puts him down as one of the most famous and capable villains of all time!

19. Brainiac

""
Image: Inverse

Brainiac is an evil villain who happens to be Superman’s second deadliest archenemy. In the comics he is portrayed as a super-intelligent alien whose intelligence is beyond human comprehension. He also happens to enjoy shrinking down planets to add to his collection where he preserves them. However, it’s not just his intellect that makes him a threat. He is also a master of mimicking the powers of Kryptonians!

Next, we have a villain that is not only powerful, but also incredibly charming and good-looking.

18. Loki

""
Image: Junkee

Loki has gained a ton of notoriety thanks to the growing popularity of the Marvel film, The Avengers. Loki’s list of abilities range from superhuman strength, an incredibly high tolerance for trauma, and the ability to heal himself on a superior level. Not only that, but he also posses a shape-shifting ability and is able to charm the pants off of anyone with his good looks! Talk about a deadly encounter.

17. Thanos

""
Image: www.sideshowtoy.com

If you’ve been paying any attention to the Internet lately, you would have noticed that Thanos has been growing ever more popular. This is due to the recent release of the film Infinity War. Even without the infinity gauntlet, Thanos is not one to mess with. He still possesses superhuman strength, the ability to manipulate matter, and is immortal – which is why he made onto our list!

16. Doctor Doom

""
Image: Screen Rant

Just like many of the other villains on our list, Doctor Doom is an evil genius. However, there is so much more to Doctor Doom than many of the others. The one thing that makes him stand out the most is the fact that he is a skilled sorcerer. With his magic abilities, he is able to summon up demons whenever he needs some extra help. His armor protects while also giving him superhuman strength and durability. On top of all of that, he is also the dictator of Latveria, which happens to supply him with a ton of resources.

Our next pick is a female villain/goddess who happens to be the daughter of one of our previously mentioned villains!

15. Hela

""
Image: Sideshow Collectibles

Hela is the Asgardian goddess of death and daughter of Loki. You can only imagine that any child of Loki’s would inherit some pretty amazing abilities. In fact, in the movie, Hela was able to destroy Thor’s most prized possession, his hammer Mjolnir. She was able to do that with nothing but her raw powers – talk about a powerful villain!

14. Larfleeze

""
Image: screenrant.com

Larfleeze, also known as Agent Orange, is one of the main antagonists to the Green Lantern. What makes Larfleeze so intimidating is the fact that he can actually completely destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy. Since he is over a billion years old, he has harnessed some pretty incredible powers and energy. That means that the most powerful immortal beings in the galaxy fear this villain – talk about a truly intimidating bad guy!

13. Ultron

""
Image: YouTube

Ultron recently got to grace the big screen with his appearance in Age of Ultron. However, the movie really didn’t do him much justice. Ultron is capable of some pretty insane mechanics that prove just how powerful he is. For example, Ultron has the ability to induce comas and then control others minds while they are in that state. The comic book version of Ultron is way more of a villain than the movie version!

12. Kang

""
Image: screenrant.com

Kang the Conqueror is one the more interesting Marvel villains. What makes Kang so intriguing is his ability to time travel. Thanks to his incredible intellect and engineering skills, he was able to master time traveling which allowed him to travel to any time period. This had some pretty scary consequences, as the Egyptians worshipped him as a god when he visited that era.

Next, we have a villain who was ranked IGN’s 49th greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

11. Anti-Monitor

""
Image: screenrant.com

Anti-Monitor is one of the most infamous super villains of all-time. This super villain has the ability to warp realities and combined with superhuman strength he has managed to create a lot of casualties that stood in his way. Anti-Monitor has destroyed worlds like it was just any other day. That’s what makes him so notorious.

10. Mister Mxyzptlk

""
Image: Screen Rant

Mister Mxyzptlk is from the 5th dimension, making him incredibly powerful. He is so powerful in fact that he can create and destroy galaxies, universes, and multiverses. However, he’s never considered as bad of a villain as, let’s say, Anti-Monitor. That’s because Mxy is usually only causing chaos to have a bit of fun. He’s not quite as malicious as the rest of these bad guys!

9. Imperiex

""
Image: YouTube

Imperiex was the main villain for the “Our Worlds at War” DC comics crossover. So what makes Imperiex such a bad boy?! Well, he is the embodiment of entropy, meaning that destroying and creating universes is just another day for him. His ultimate goal however, is to create the perfect universe. His is such a powerful force of energy that only the big bang could eventually destroy him.

8. Mephisto

""
Image: YouTube

Mephisto is basically a demon with the powers of magic and immortality on his side. He is also known for striking deals with people just like the devil would. Although he could be one of the most powerful villains in existence, there is one caveat. His abilities constantly change from every appearance. So although he’s pretty wickedly strong, it also depends on the storyline!

7. Trigon

""
Image: DC Universe Online Wiki

Trigon is by far one of the scariest evil villains of all-time! He is an ultra-powerful demon who also happens to be the father of Raven from the Teen Titans. Trigon’s favorite thing to do is to create a personal hell for every planet that he has managed to conquer. He has managed to enslave many worlds, but has been kept at bay by the legions of superheroes in DC’s universe – at least, for now.

6. Dormammu

""
Image: Looper

Dormammu happens to be one of the bigger threats to the Marvel Universe. He is a master of dark magic, is able to teleport throughout dimensions, and can manipulate energy. However, Dormammu does have one weakness that keeps him from being too powerful. If he ever finds himself in an area where he cannot use his “Faltine flames” he becomes incredibly weak!

5. Darkseid

""
Image: Inverse

Darkseid is a New God and the ruler of Apokalips. As an evil dictator he wants to end free will. His powers are so unbelievable that even Superman’s boots were rattling around this guy! All we know is that we’d never want to cross paths with this bad guy…

Next, we have a villain whose outer appearance might be more intimidating than its actual powers…

4. Starro

""
Image: Alien Species Wiki – Fandom

Starro is a starfish alien villain that has an outer appearance so terrifyingly ugly that it’s more unsettling than his actual powers. This alien villain is capable of unleashing a great number of clones onto the planet he is attacking. The clones then attach themselves onto their prey and Starro is then able to control their minds! Pretty scary, huh?!

3. Galactus

""
Image: Screen Rant

Galactus is an interesting villain when compared to many of the others on this list. Unlike many of the others, he started off as a mortal man. These days, he spends his time eating planets because he’s hungry. So although his actions aren’t quite malicious, it still costs a lot of planets inhabitants their lives.

2. Krona

""
Image: Screen Rant

Krona is a villain who has been a part of both the DC and Marvel universes, making him unique in that nature. Krona was once a scientist and when he worked as one he was completely obsessed with being able to see how the universe was formed. He was then punished and turned into energy and now he attempts to destroy the universe whenever he gets the chance.

1. Tyrant

""
Image: Reddit

Tyrant is the creation of Galactus, the world eater that we mentioned previously. It seems that when Galactus got a bit lonely, he decided to craft a machine that would be equal in strength to him. So thus, Tyrant was born and he demonstrated superhuman strength and invulnerability. Eventually Tyrant became so powerful that Galactus could barely control him! This left Tyrant free to continue to conquer and destroy planets.
