Even though the Allied Forces ended up winning in World War II, that doesn’t mean that they didn’t make mistakes along the way. Although the history books tend to gloss over the mistakes of the victor, it is pretty important to learn about them. These lessons in history can help us avoid making mistakes in the future. For example, did you know that the US greatly underestimated Japan before the bombing of Pearl Harbor? It was these and many more tactical errors that certainly could have cost the Allies the war! In fact, #7 will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about the war!

15. Pointe Du Hoc

""
Image: list25.com

Right before D-Day, three U.S. Army Ranger companies were sent to Pointe Du Hoc, cliff between Utah and Omaha Beaches in Normandy. Their mission was to capture the battery of 155mm guns that were stationed there by the Germans. The mission’s end goal was to disarm the Germans so that they wouldn’t be able to open fire on soldiers that were going to be landing on Utah and Omaha Beaches. However, the plan quickly fell apart when German defenses delayed them by forty minutes. Once they finally arrived, the guns had been moved and this cost the lives of 150 to 200 men. Eventually reinforcements had to head over to Omaha Beach.

14. Omaha Beach

""
Image: list25.com

The showdown at Omaha Beach was also far from fully successful. The Allied Forces made a ton of mistaking, one of the biggest was sending out the Navy too far out into choppy waters. This resulted in a huge number of vessels capsizing and cost many soldiers their lives. On top of that, the airborne fleet landed in a highly disorganized fashion, leaving troops vulnerable. Many of them had to hide behind the bodies of their dead comrades in order to survive. The only bright side in this story is that the Germans were just as disorganized during this invasion.

13. Appeasement Failure

""
Image: list25.com

Before World War 2 began, all of Europe was hoping to avoid another war. In order to do that, Britain and France decided to take on a policy of appeasement to avoid conflict. Hitler saw that he could use this policy as an advantage to himself and his plans. The policy was seen in quite a bad light after English Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain met with Hitler at Berchtesgaden. He essentially gave Hitler all of the Sudetenland without ever consulting with the Czech government. Once Hitler got what he wanted he completely dismembered Czechoslovakia.

Next, you won’t believe how racism and arrogance played a major role in the bombing of Pearl Harbor…

12. Racism & Arrogance

""
Image: list25.com

The Americans held some pretty racist and ignorant views against the Japanese, causing them to greatly underestimate them. This is one of the biggest reasons America was so unprepared when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Americans assumed that the Japanese were behind in technological advances and many newspapers and magazines portrayed them in a horrible light. They also assumed that the Japanese weren’t very skilled aviators, which eventually led them to being quite vulnerable when the Japanese did attack.

11. The German Blitz

""
Image: list25.com

One of the biggest mistakes that the Allies made was constantly underestimating Hitler’s actions and plans. Due to this, Hitler was able to invade France through the Ardennes, France – something the Allies thought he would never do. This led to the German Blitzkrieg, known today as one of the most devastating military defeats of the 20th century. This eventually forced France to surrender to Hitler. However, Hitler wasn’t done just yet. He forced France to surrender in the same carriage that Germany surrendered 22 years before. Hitler even toured around Paris and took a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower.

10. No Action Against The Polish Invasion

""
Image: list25.com

England and France made a promise to Poland that if Hitler were to invade the country that they would declare war and help. However, when Hitler finally invaded on September 1st, 1939, the two countries did absolutely nothing in retaliation. Hitler was able to completely destroy the Polish military and within 27 days, Warsaw surrendered. England and France declared war against Hitler, but ultimately did nothing and Poland remained occupied by the Nazis until 1945.

9. Anzio

""
Image: list25.com

On January 22, 1944, British and American troops landed on the shores of Italy near Anzio and Nettuno.

Germany had barely any fighting power there, so the American and British troops were able to easily complete many of their objectives. This allowed to move 4 miles inland in a short amount of time. However, instead of taking the initiative to use the lack of German preparation to their advantage, the troops decided to wait on moving toward Rome. This allowed the Germans to prepare and led to one of the bloodiest fights in the war.

8. Americans Didn’t Adopt The Convoy System

""
Image: list25.com

British forces had been dealing with the Germans and their U-Boats for quite some time and they were prepared to combat them with a unique system known as the Convoy System. However, since the Americans had joined in on the war so late, the United States didn’t adopt this system until 1942. This turned out to be a huge liability throughout the war and cost the Allies a lot of lost lives and tactical errors.

Next, we have an American general whose early mistakes almost cost the U.S. the war…

7. Dwight D. Eisenhower

""
Image: list25.com

Before he became the 34th President of the U.S., Dwight D. Eisenhower served as an American army general throughout World War 2. He was a five-star general who has been dubbed one of America’s greatest generals. However, did you know that his start in the war was far from prestigious. He was met with many errors and was responsible for a great number of logistical errors. He also failed to lead in combat operations. British contemporary Field Marshal Alan Brooke grew increasingly frustrated with Eisenhower and criticized him harshly, saying, “Nice chap, no general.”

6. French Army’s Disorganization

""
Image: list25.com

The French army’s lack of organization was one of the biggest reasons that the Germans were able to attack so easily. The French failed to participate in the German blitzkrieg strategy in an appropriate way as they were not prepared. Blitzkrieg strategies are extremely vulnerable to flanking and counter-attacks, a strategy that the Russians had worked hard to developed. This lack of strategy and organization led to their surrender.

5. FDR & Unconditional Surrender

""
Image: list25.com

FDR quickly proved that talking “too big” can actually make a situation worse rather than better. In January of 1943, Roosevelt and Churchill met near Casablanca. During a press meeting, FDR called for the “unconditional surrender” of Germany. This took Churchill completely by surprise as he knew that this would end up costing more lives of the troops and he was right. This statement forced the Germans to begin fighting even more desperately!

4. Not Enough American Submarines

""
Image: list25.com

The Submarine Service of the United States represented only 1.6% of all Navy personnel during the war. However, they were also responsible for over 55% of all Japanese ships sunk. Although this is quite impressive it also presents us with a huge blindspot that the American Navy had. The Germans had been using U-Boats since World War I and there was no reason why the US couldn’t have adopted a strategy to attack the German U-Boats in the same fashion. This could have helped end the war much sooner.

3. Dunkirk

""
Image: list25.com

In today’s history, Dunkirk is considered a major success story as the mission was able to rescue hundreds of thousands of British soldiers from enemy territory. However, did you know that it was also one of the most massive military disasters? The 400,000 British troops stationed in Belgium were left to fight against the Germans. However, they were quickly surrounded and it was all due to poor planning and a lack of leadership. If the mission hadn’t been a success, the war might have turned out much differently…

2. Caen

""
Image: list25.com

The British ended up shooting themselves in the foot after the Normandy Invasion. British General Bernard Montgomery made a horrible tactical error when they decided to heavily shell the Paris city of Caen. This basically cut off a straight pathway to Paris because of all of the rubble that was standing in their way.

1. Poorly Designed Tanks

""
Image: list25.com

In comparison to the Germans, the American and British forces had much worse tanks. The tanks were incredibly poorly designed and their tanks rarely stood up against the Germans. What ended up helping the Allies were their air support and the fact that they had a greater number of tanks than the Germans.
